Relay for Life!

This week the entire campus is covered in PURPLE! It is an exciting time at Shorecrest, gearing up for our annual Relay for Life celebration on Friday. All classes will spend that day walking the track - to show our support for those who have and are battling cancer. This year the relay brings special meaning to many of us as we remember our dear friend, Mrs. Weinman.

Third and fourth graders will begin their final Presidential Fitness Challenge of the year. Many of our students find this part of our curriculum to be difficult, and often a great source of anxiety. It is my sincere hope to help these students have a positive experience and understand the value of these tests for both themselves as students, and us as teachers. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to specifically help your child! Hope you all have a very Happy April :)

Alleyball

This week classes will learn a new form of kickball - Alleyball - in the Rec Gym. Like traditional kickball, runners attempt to score runs by safely making their way around the bases, however, this version utilizes an "alley" down the center of the gym and only two bases. Students have been making connections to other games and sports they have learned throughout the year, and are realizing, on their own, that many of the basic principles of one can be applied to others. This is an important part of learning strategy and using athletics to become better problem solvers! Its also a whole lot of FUN!

Welcome to 3rd Trimester!

Welcome to PE with Coach Pope! I'm excited to begin working with my new groups for our second trimester of school: Mrs. Vigue's group, Mrs. Whitecage's class, Ms. O'Mullane's group, Ms. Mitchell's group, and the boys from Ms. Telemachos' and Mr. Hughes' classes!

This week all grade levels will be introduced to Burnball - a Swedish version of baseball. Many of the rules of the game are very similar to American baseball but there is one VERY important difference, there are NO outs! Burnball enables students to not only improve their hand-eye coordination and running skills, but critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well. We'll even throw in a little math! Its great fun - ask your child to compare and contrast Burnball and American baseball. Ask which one they prefer!

Bocce Time!

This week students in all grade levels will be introduced to the game of Bocce Ball. Bocce is a relatively simple game that involves rolling a ball - the bocce - as close as possible to the target - the pallino. Through Bocce. students are working on hand-eye coordination, judgement, sportsmanship, fair play, and score keeping. Another great benefit - its pretty easy to be good! Fun for all on the field this week!

For the fourth graders, this unit is the first of several "tournament units." Giving the game a more competitive focus not only helps to keep the boys interested and on task, it also prepares them for real life situations that involve winning and losing. We look forward to seeing them exhibit the maturity we know they have developed!

This week all classes will be working on different racket skills in the Crisp Gym. We'll try lollipop rackets, badminton, and Speed Minton too! Its sure to be a fun week with lots of practice working on hand-eye coordination!

Happy 2013!

Welcome back everyone! I sincerely hope your winter break was wonderful and you are ready for a happy and healthy new year!

This week 3rd and 4th graders will be participating in our Winter round of Fitness testing. Doing the test now allows us to work on the areas we need to before the final administration of the test in the Spring.

We will review alleyball and play games in all other grade levels. Have a terrific week!
